Navigational Deflector - Mid Section (Deck 11)

The mid-section is a tall, narrow vertical shaft rather than an open compartment, running the full height of Deck 11 at the forward tip of the ship and open at both ends to the levels above and below through heavy grated deck hatches. A spiral service ladder of perforated metal rungs, bolted to the shaft's curved inner wall, spirals down its full length, interrupted at intervals by small landing platforms just wide enough for a single technician to stand and work. The shaft's walls are a dense lattice of exposed structural ribbing, painted the same flat grey as the rest of the ship but scuffed and worn along the ladder's handholds where years of gloved hands have left the paint thin.
Thick trunks of plasma conduit, sheathed in ribbed grey-white insulation, run the length of the shaft in twin parallel bundles, branching off at each landing platform into smaller feeder lines that vanish into access panels set flush into the curved wall. A soft blue-white glow filters down from the field-coil housing above, mixing partway down the shaft with the warmer amber wash of small emergency lighting strips set at each landing, so that the illumination shifts gradually in color and intensity the further one descends. The air grows perceptibly warmer and carries a faint ozone tang the closer one gets to the lower assembly, and a steady low hum resonates through the shaft's metal framework, occasionally rising into a brief harmonic buzz when the deflector cycles through a diagnostic sweep.
At the third landing platform, a small alcove holds a compact damage-control locker bolted to the wall, its door marked with the ship's standard red cross-hazard iconography, alongside a coiled emergency air hose. Looking straight down the shaft from the top hatch, the lower assembly's broader chamber is visible as a distant wash of pale light two decks below, framed by the receding rings of grating and conduit that mark each intervening level.
