QSD Power Conditioning (Port & Starboard) (Deck 13)

The power conditioning compartments flank the central QSD systems on both the port and starboard sides of Deck 13, each a tightly packed room dominated by rows of massive capacitor-transformer units standing floor to overhead like a small forest of dark, ribbed cylinders. Each unit is finished in a deep matte grey, banded at intervals with thick copper-toned conduit collars, and fitted with a small viewport near its base that glows a steady white when charged and holding, flickering rapidly during an active power transfer. A narrow central aisle runs between the two facing rows, just wide enough for a single technician to pass, the deck plating here a heavy perforated grid that allows waste heat to vent downward into a cooling plenum below. Overhead, a dense tangle of heavy-gauge conduit crosses from unit to unit, feeding into a single massive distribution trunk that exits the compartment toward the field emitter array; the conduit is wrapped in a thick insulating sheath that nonetheless radiates a noticeable warmth when the drive is engaged. A single monitoring console stands just inside the entrance, its LCARS display tracking load balance across all units in a simple color-coded bar graph, green under normal load and shifting to amber or red during a slipstream transition. The compartments are markedly warmer than the surrounding corridors, especially near the aisle's far end closest to the primary trunk connection, and the air carries a persistent hot-metal smell mixed with ozone. Lighting is minimal, a scattering of caged fixtures along the aisle rather than a full overhead grid, leaving much of the room in the flickering glow of the capacitor viewports. A deep mechanical thrum fills the space at all times, rising into a resonant, almost physical vibration through the deck plating during a full-power slipstream spin-up.
