Reserve Warp Core Storage Tube (Deck 16)

This tall vertical silo occupies a dedicated compartment adjacent to the primary warp core's mid-level gallery, holding the ship's complete spare warp core suspended upright within a heavily reinforced storage tube. The reserve core itself is visible through a series of narrow vertical viewing slits cut into the tube's outer housing, its dark plating and dormant power conduits catching only the faint reflected light of the compartment's utility fixtures, entirely inert and silent in a way that contrasts sharply with the constant hum of the active core nearby. The tube's structure is a heavy cylindrical shell of layered composite and structural alloy banding, anchored to the deck and overhead by massive mounting collars designed to hold the multi-ton core assembly securely even under significant stress.
A retractable gantry crane is mounted on rails set into the overhead, folded back against the far bulkhead when not in use, ready to extend and lower into position to extract the reserve core through a large hull-side deployment hatch in the rare event it must be moved into the primary core's housing. The deployment hatch itself is a broad segmented door, ringed in the same yellow-and-black hazard chevrons found at other major hull openings throughout the ship, currently sealed and indistinguishable from the surrounding hull plating but for the maintenance access panel set beside it.
The compartment surrounding the tube is otherwise sparse, a narrow walkway circling the storage housing for visual inspection, with a small diagnostic terminal recessed into the wall near the entrance displaying the reserve core's standby status, structural integrity, and readiness rating in a simple column of green indicators. The air here is cool and still, carrying none of the ionized warmth of the active core spaces, and the compartment sits in near-total silence, the reserve core a dormant, waiting presence held in reserve against a catastrophe none aboard hope to ever need it for.
