Reserve Core EVA Staging Area (Deck 16)

Tucked beside the reserve core storage compartment, this small staging area exists solely to support the rare occasions when the spare core's deployment hatch must be accessed from outside the ship or under vacuum conditions. One wall holds a compact bank of six EVA suit lockers, each a tall, narrow cabinet with a transparent inspection panel showing the suit within hanging ready, helmet racked on a shelf above. The suits here are utilitarian work models rather than the sleeker suits found near the main shuttlebay, chosen for their durability during heavy mechanical work rather than mobility.
A low bench runs along the opposite wall, its padded seat worn thin in places, positioned to allow a crew member to sit while sealing boots and checking suit integrity before proceeding to the small adjoining airlock. The airlock itself is a simple two-hatch design, its inner door fitted with a small viewport and a status light that cycles amber during depressurization and green once the outer door is safe to cycle. A compact equipment rack beside the airlock holds tethers, tool satchels, and a pair of portable work lights, all secured with quick-release clips for rapid deployment.
The room's walls are plain grey composite, and lighting is bright and even, chosen for practical suit-up work rather than atmosphere. A small wall-mounted display near the airlock shows current hull conditions and outside temperature for whatever region of the ship the airlock opens onto, along with suit telemetry once a crew member is sealed in and ready. The compartment carries the faint neutral smell of stored suit materials and recycled air, and but for the occasional test-cycle hum of the airlock mechanism, it sits in quiet readiness, used only on the infrequent occasions when the reserve core compartment's outer hatch calls for direct attention.
