Raw Materials Storage (Deck 18)

This long, high-ceilinged storage bay holds row upon row of standardized raw material canisters, each a squat cylindrical container roughly a meter tall, finished in dull utilitarian grey and marked with a color-coded band and stenciled designation identifying its contents, be it structural polymer feedstock, metallic ore compounds, or the more exotic base elements needed for specialized fabrication work. The canisters are stacked three high on heavy shelving units that run in parallel aisles the length of the compartment, each shelf rated for the considerable weight of a fully loaded row and fitted with a simple mechanical retention bar to prevent shifting during any unusual ship maneuvering. A automated retrieval arm rides a ceiling-mounted track above the central aisle, capable of locating and extracting a specific canister on request and delivering it to a loading point near the compartment's forward end, its mechanical arm folding and extending with a soft hydraulic whine whenever summoned. Deck plating throughout is heavy industrial grating, scuffed pale in the well-worn paths between aisles, and small placards mounted at the head of each row list the inventory held there in dense abbreviated code familiar to the deck's regular crew. Lighting is bright and even, angled to eliminate shadow along the full height of the shelving for easy visual inventory checks, and the compartment carries a faint dry, mineral scent particular to bulk stored raw materials, quite different from the ozone tang of the replicator bays it supplies. The ambient sound is mostly silence, broken periodically by the mechanical hum and soft clunk of the retrieval arm completing a fetch cycle, the compartment otherwise still and orderly, its rows of canisters waiting in patient readiness to be called upon and transformed into whatever the ship's engineers next require.
