Industrial Equipment Workshop (Deck 18)
Created by Captain Natira Dareese on Wed Sep 23rd, 2026 @ 12:38am
This heavy fabrication workshop occupies a broad, high-ceilinged compartment fitted out for building and repairing equipment housings, structural brackets, and other large components too substantial for the deck's general machine shop. A heavy-duty workbench spans one entire wall, its surface a scarred slab of reinforced composite pitted and scorched from years of welding, cutting, and fitting work, with a row of built-in power ports feeding the various tools clamped along its length. Overhead, a gantry crane rides a track spanning the compartment's width, its hook and chain assembly currently raised and idle but clearly rated for moving heavy fabricated components between the workbench and the deck's larger equipment.
A dedicated welding and cutting station occupies one corner, marked off by retractable safety curtains of dark tinted material to shield the rest of the compartment from arc flash, with a ventilation hood mounted directly above to draw off fumes. Racks of raw structural stock, beams, plating sheets, and bar stock, line the opposite wall, organized by material type and gauge, close at hand for whatever fabrication job is underway. A rolling tool chest sits parked near the main workbench, its drawers a comprehensive collection of hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment.
The deck is heavy industrial grating, scarred with the marks of dropped stock and dragged equipment, and the walls are unfinished grey composite marked here and there with scorch patterns from welding work over the years. The compartment carries the sharp, acrid smell of hot metal and flux, mixed with a faint machine oil undertone, and lighting is bright, angled work lighting positioned to eliminate shadow across the main bench. The ambient sound, when work is underway, is a mix of the sharp crack and hiss of welding arcs, the whine of cutting tools, and the occasional heavy clunk of stock being shifted into position, the whole space carrying an unmistakable atmosphere of hands-on industrial labor.
