General Machine Shop (Deck 18)

In contrast to the heavy fabrication workshop's industrial scale, the general machine shop is a tighter, more precise space geared toward small-component work, replacement parts, and fine-tolerance repairs. A row of compact machining stations lines one wall, each a self-contained unit combining a precision lathe, milling head, and laser-guided cutting tool beneath a single protective housing with a clear polymer shield, allowing an operator to observe work in progress while shielded from flying debris. The stations hum with a fine, controlled whine when active, considerably quieter and higher-pitched than the industrial equipment found elsewhere on the deck.
A long workbench runs along the opposite wall, its surface inlaid with a grid of standardized mounting points for securing small components during hand-finishing work, and above it a pegboard holds an extensive array of precision hand tools, calipers, micrometers, and fine files, each in its designated outline. A dedicated inspection station near the compartment's center holds a magnification array and a small sensor cradle for verifying finished components against exacting tolerance specifications before they're cleared for installation elsewhere on the ship.
The deck here is smooth composite rather than heavy grating, kept scrupulously clean given the precision nature of the work, and the walls are a pale, clean grey distinct from the scorched and scuffed finishes found in the heavier fabrication spaces. Lighting is bright, focused, and shadow-free, essential for the fine detail work conducted at each station. The compartment carries a faint clean metallic smell, cutting oil and machined metal shavings rather than the acrid burn of welding, and the ambient sound is a controlled, almost delicate chorus of precision tools at work, occasionally punctuated by the soft chime of a completed inspection cycle confirming a component meets specification.
