Communal Head

Communal head facilities appear at high-traffic points throughout the ship wherever quarters share washroom access rather than the private facilities used by officers - the block serving the Marine Barracks on Deck 3 is a typical example, sized for the detachment's volume of use.
The room is divided into two mirrored sides by a central plumbing core, each side holding a row of individual sonic shower stalls behind frosted, floor-to-ceiling partition panels, doors marked occupied or vacant by a small strip of light along the frame - green when free, amber when in use. A separate row of lavatory stalls continues past the showers, each with its own door reaching from waist height to just above head height, leaving a gap at the top and bottom.
Along the entry wall, a long counter holds a row of washbasins beneath a single continuous mirror, its surface faintly fogged near the shower side of the room. The walls and floor are a hard, seamless, water-resistant composite, paler than the corridor outside and sloped almost imperceptibly toward drains spaced along the floor's centerline.
Lighting is bright and evenly distributed, with a slightly damp, humid quality to the air near the shower stalls and a low, constant hiss of water recycling equipment audible behind the walls. The acoustics are hard and reflective - running water, footsteps, and voices all carry further here than in almost any other space on the ship.
Notable Variants
Utility Head (Deck 19): A much smaller, purely functional facility set into a side wall near the motor pool section of the cargo deck, plainer even than the standard communal head, built for quick use by cargo handlers and vehicle crews rather than extended comfort. Just a single sink and two stalls in hard-wearing white composite against unadorned grey walls, with the cargo bay's own heavy-duty non-slip flooring extending through the doorway and a boot-scraper grate at the entrance. A wall-mounted dispenser holds heavy-duty hand cleaner rather than the standard sonic units found in crew-facing facilities, and the air carries the mingled scent of machine lubricant and stored freight from the cargo bay beyond.
