Transporter Pattern Buffers

Pattern buffer rooms house the banks of buffer housings that hold a transporter's matter stream in temporary suspension during a transport cycle, each bank wired directly up to the transporter room(s) it serves one or more decks above. The compartments are tall and narrow, built around whatever housing configuration their particular bank uses, with a diagnostic console or manifold for monitoring buffer capacity and pattern integrity, a service ladder or platform for manual access, and plain, utilitarian wall and floor finishes throughout. All of them share a characteristic electronic hum at rest that rises into a higher-pitched whine or flickers through active indicator sequences whenever a pattern is being held during a transport in progress, along with a faint ozone smell common to transporter systems shipwide. Notable Variants Saucer Pattern Buffers (Deck 5): Feeds the Deck 4 transporter rooms above. A tall, narrow space at the mid-deck center-spine dominated by a tightly packed column of dull-metal buffer housings marked with sequential unit numbers, connected upward through raised, ribbed conduit sleeves in the overhead. A single diagnostic console near the entrance shows buffer capacity and pattern integrity as a column of steady green indicators. The room's electronic hum is higher-pitched than the SIF generators elsewhere on the ship, with brief, almost musical fluctuations when the transporters above cycle. Engineering Pattern Buffers (Deck 14): Feeds Transporter Rooms 3 and 4 one level above. A bank of eight cylindrical buffer housings, finished in a smooth pale composite shell, arranged in two facing rows, each with a strip of indicator lights that flickers through blue-white pulses during an active cycle. The housings connect to a central junction manifold linked by a heavier trunk line to the deck above, with a service ladder beside the manifold for manual diagnostics. The floor between the rows is a perforated metal grate for cooling airflow, lighting is dim with the housings' own lights as the main illumination during a cycle, and the air carries a faint static charge.
