Chemistry & Molecular Analysis Lab (Deck 8)

This lab reads as noticeably more clinical than its geology counterpart across the corridor - brighter, whiter, and built around sealed containment rather than open sample handling. The centerpiece is a long fume-hood enclosure running down the starboard wall, its clear transparent aluminum front panel able to seal fully over a section of workspace, with small internal manipulator arms visible for handling volatile or hazardous compounds without opening the enclosure.
A molecular analysis station sits opposite, a broad console with a raised sample port at its center where a container can be sealed in for spectrographic or molecular scanning, results scrolling across the console surface in the ship's standard amber LCARS text. Narrow storage racks along the aft wall hold neatly labeled sample vials in rows of small illuminated cubbies, most glowing a soft white to confirm stable containment.
A second workbench near the door holds more general-purpose equipment - a compact centrifuge, a heating and cooling unit for material stress testing, and a rack of hand tools and sample containers within easy reach. The floor and walls are a bright white composite rather than the neutral grey of most lab spaces, chosen for its resistance to chemical staining and ease of decontamination, with grated floor drains set discreetly near the fume hood.
Overhead lighting is even and slightly harsher than in adjoining labs, and a faint clean, faintly sharp chemical smell lingers near the fume hood regardless of ventilation. The room's ambient sound is a light electronic hum from the analysis equipment, occasionally broken by the soft hiss of the fume hood's containment field cycling or a status chime from a completed scan.
