Secondary Sickbay / Mass Casualty Triage Center (Deck 8)

In its dormant state, this compartment reads as a large, mostly empty hall - a wide open floor bounded by pale grey walls, with rows of collapsed cot frames folded flush against the bulkheads on either side and a scattering of biobed housings recessed into alcoves rather than standing free in the room. Ceiling-mounted holo-emitters, spaced evenly overhead, sit dark and unobtrusive, easy to miss unless pointed out. When activated for a mass-casualty event, the room transforms within minutes: cot frames swing down and lock into rows, each unfolding a thin medical mattress and its own compact vitals monitor on a swing arm. The four biobed alcoves along the starboard wall power up with a rising hum, their diagnostic canopies glowing pale blue, while the holo-emitters overhead can project up to a full EMH program to assist attending staff during overflow situations. A supply station near the entrance holds sealed medical kits, field dressings, and portable regenerators in a floor-to-ceiling cabinet, secured behind a simple manual latch rather than the more elaborate security of the main Sickbay Complex several decks below. A separate, smaller alcove houses the compartment's independent battery backup, a reassuring presence for a room meant to function even during a significant power failure. The floor is the same easy-clean composite used in the main sickbay, and the walls carry faint scuff marks near the folded cot frames from routine drills. At rest, the room is silent apart from a soft standby hum from the biobed alcoves; fully activated, it fills quickly with the overlapping tones of vitals monitors, the murmur of triage assessments, and the brisk movement of staff between cots.
