Docking Ports (Deck 8)

Each docking port opens off a short spur corridor branching from the main mid-deck passage, ending in a wide circular airlock door distinct from the ship's standard rectangular interior doors. The door itself is ringed with a series of alignment lights, dark unless a compatible docking collar is present outside, at which point they cycle amber and then steady green once a hard seal is confirmed. Beside each port, a waist-high control pedestal displays docking status - seal integrity, atmospheric pressure differential, and structural clamp engagement - in the same amber-and-blue LCARS scheme used throughout the ship. A retractable handrail folds down from the bulkhead beside the pedestal, intended to help crew or visitors keep their footing during the brief transition across a docking interface. The spur corridors themselves are slightly wider than standard passageways, built to allow cargo transfer or a small group to queue comfortably before boarding or receiving guests. The forward port's corridor bends briefly to align with the hull's curvature, while the port and starboard ports sit in straighter runs closer to the ship's centerline. When a port is unoccupied, the area is quiet apart from the low ambient hum common to hull-adjacent compartments, and the airlock door itself is cool to the touch, colder than interior doors elsewhere on the deck. During an active docking operation, a distinct mechanical clank of docking clamps engaging can be felt underfoot moments before the alignment lights turn green and the door itself becomes safe to open.
