Shuttle Maintenance Pits (Deck 10)

Set into the deck along the flanks of the main shuttlebay, each pit is a sunken rectangular bay a few steps below the level of the main flight deck, sized to swallow a shuttlecraft whole with clearance to spare around the hull. A retractable railing runs around the pit's edge at flight deck level, currently folded flush except where a craft is actively being serviced.
Within each pit, an articulated diagnostic gantry can extend over and around a parked shuttle, its sensor heads and manipulator arms able to reach the underside of a hull that would otherwise require the craft to be lifted. Recessed floor lighting inside the pit throws work light upward onto a craft's belly, supplementing handheld work lights technicians clip to the hull itself.
Along one wall of each pit, a rack of spare parts and diagnostic tie-in cables waits within easy reach, and a small suited-crew airlock nearby allows technicians to work in a micro-gravity or vacuum-simulated environment when a repair calls for it, without needing to depressurize the entire shuttlebay. Status boards mounted at the pit's edge track which systems on the parked craft are currently being diagnosed or repaired.
The pits carry a more focused, workshop-like atmosphere than the open bay above, tools clanking against hull plating and the occasional hiss of a sealant application breaking the otherwise steady hum of diagnostic equipment. Grease and hydraulic fluid stains mark the pit floors in places despite regular cleaning, a testament to how heavily used these spaces are during any extended deployment.
